At the end of the 2008, I tried to compile my own personal ‘Top 10 games of 2008′ list. I got to about #6 when I drew a blank. Had I played 10 games that warranted being in a ‘top ten’ list? Had I, for that matter, actually played 10 games in 2008? I couldn’t for the life of me remember. After some struggling, and some help from friends I finished that list. And since lost it.
Towards the end of January ’09 I played a browser based flash puzzle game called ‘Splitter‘. It was a real gem and I recomended it to my gamer friends, refering to it jokingly as ‘Game of the Week’. It’s not a huge accolade from one who is not paid to play games, and so probably only plays one game a week at best; just a nod to a modest game worthy of attention. My friends really enjoyed Splitter and started asking me what my next game of the week would be – assuming I’d be able to pull another modest gem out of my pocket every week. I think they’d all agree that I utterly failed to do that. Nonetheless, I have continued recording my ‘GotW’ every week and scoring it.
The game is almost never a new game that week, just the week it happened to wind up in my hands and capture my imagination. Indeed, I don’t always play a ‘proper’ game every week, the ‘GotW’ is not always even a videogame. Always though, it will have engaged me enough to want to talk to someone about it and I like to think that even if the ‘GotW’ is not a game you would or even should play, then at least it will be worth your being made aware of it.
Ultimately, the list is incredibly personal. Yes, this is fundamentally, just another self absorbed ‘diary’ blog. This is really more of a twitter blog – status updates of what I’m playing this week and why. For example, a disproportionate number of games in Q1 at least are iphone games, because I got an iphone in February. Of course, all that means is that you should go out and record your Games of the weeks because of the absurd subjectivity there really can’t be arguments – it’s just to compare notes and to keep track of what the hell I’ve been doing all year.
Note: I only started this blog after almost 3 months of recording GotW so my plan is to catch up on them by writing a few short thoughts about the GotWs thus far in separate entries. Eventually ‘catching up’ to at least one post per week.
